You’re ready to make some serious home improvements, but you have no idea how much your projects will cost. How do you know what will and won’t fit into your budget? You know you should get some comparative estimates, but how do you know if these estimates are reasonable and fair?  A great tool for estimating home improvement project costs is the annual Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report.

An Unbiased Look at Home Improvement Project Costs

Why is this tool so valuable? Because it gives homeowners and contractors an unbiased, third-party report on how much it really costs for a professional to do a typical remodeling project by geographic location.  In addition to cost, it gives a good description of the scope of work for each project. For example, a “minor kitchen remodel” in Portland, Maine is estimated at costing $19,488 and the work is described as follows:

“In a functional but dated 200-square-foot kitchen with 30 linear feet of cabinetry and countertops, leave cabinet boxes in place but replace fronts with new shaker-style wood panels and drawer fronts, including new hardware. Replace cooktop/oven range and slide-in refrigerator with new energy-efficient models. Replace laminate countertops; install mid-priced sink and faucet. Repaint trim, add wall covering, and remove and replace resilient flooring.”

The report also provides an estimate of how much a given project will increase a home’s value, a summary of key trends, and a comparison of costs over the years.

Remodeling 2017 Cost vs. Value Report

This year’s report analyzed 29 common home improvement projects—from installing attic insulation, to remodeling a kitchen, to adding a family room. Because both cost and value vary dramatically by location, data was gathered from 99 markets nationwide. For help in estimating home improvement project costs in your area, simply click on the appropriate region and city. Once you fill in a few fields, you will be able to download a complete report. For example, the cost of a composite deck addition is an estimated  $16,034 in Portland, Maine and $18,667 in Seattle, Washington.
